Bio

MaryAnn Green has been an educator in the Bethlehem Area School District for 28 years. She has taught at the middle and elementary levels, served as the district elementary math specialist, and is currently an elementary teacher of the gifted across multiple schools in the district. She has an undergrad degree in Elementary Education with minors in both Music and Psychology. She received her Masters Degree in Education Leadership with a K- 12 Administrator Certification. It was in her role as teacher of the gifted that she discovered her passion for Education Justice. The disparity of gifted identified students was staggering and students of color were drastically under-represented. She took her concerns to administrators who agreed it was time to take a look at how students were being identified. Several years later, the district has a distinct plan in place to screen students with multi-faceted criteria and not just a biased screener in order to make sure we are identifying ALL students who need special services. She consistently plans meaningful professional development offerings to the staff of the BASD and across the region, covering topics as varied as identifying disparities in gifted screeners, to effective delivery of gifted services to all students, and most recently, racial awareness and equity. MaryAnn has served as the Membership Chair for the Bethlehem Education Association and is an integral member of the Executive Board. MaryAnn serves as the Committee Chair for the Eastern Region Education Justice Committee and regularly attends state committee meetings. Her region committee has passionately stepped up to the call of providing awareness to the discrepancies in our education system and has recently created a series of professional development webinars based on a 21 Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge. We are moving our region from anti-racist to ally through professional development and advocacy across the region. MaryAnn is passionate about education and believes ‘We all have the same destination, but some of us need to take different roads to get there. It is our responsibility as educators to put the needed supports in place so that ALL students succeed.’
